About Ted Cruz

Theodore (Ted) Cruz was born on December 22, 1970, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Rafael Bienvenido Cruz and Eleanor Darragh. Ted's parents were Cuban immigrants who fled Fidel Castro's communist revolution. This early exposure to the consequences of political upheaval would significantly influence his future career as a U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate. Cruz spent most of his childhood in Houston, Texas, where he developed a passion for debating and public speaking at Second Baptist School. He later attended Princeton University, where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Public Policy. Cruz then pursued a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Harvard Law School, serving as the President of the Federalist Society during his time there. In 2003, Cruz entered politics when he was elected Solicitor General of Texas. During his tenure, he argued and won nine cases before the Supreme Court of the United States. In 2012, he ran for and won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Texas, serving since January 3, 2013. Cruz is known for his conservative views and often finds himself at odds with the Democratic party. Some of his major works include introducing legislation to repeal Obamacare, advocating for stricter border control, and supporting Israel. Cruz ran for President in the 2016 Republican primaries but ultimately lost the nomination to Donald Trump. Despite controversy surrounding his citizenship and eligibility for office due to his birth in Canada, Ted Cruz remains a prominent figure in U.S. politics, continuing to represent Texas in the Senate and making headlines with his outspoken conservative views.

We are here today because of grass-roots conservatives all over the place. That's the way the democratic process is supposed to work. It's not supposed to be a bunch of guys in a smoky room in Austin picking the next Senator.
