About Robert Jenkins

Robert Jenkins (1700-1776) was a prominent English pirate and author, best known for his memoir "A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates." Born in 1700 in Plymouth, England, Jenkins began his career at sea as a common seaman. He served in the Royal Navy until he was discharged due to an injury sustained during the Battle of Cape Passaro (1718). Jenkins then turned to privateering, where he eventually joined the crew of the pirate ship Fancy, under Captain Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. Jenkins served as Blackbeard's quartermaster and was present during many of his most famous exploits, including the capture of the Royal Navy ship HMS Anne. In 1718, Jenkins was captured by a group of British naval forces and taken to Virginia for trial. Despite testifying against some of his former pirate associates, Jenkins managed to secure a pardon for himself. This pardon came with the condition that he write an account of his experiences as a pirate. Jenkins' memoir was published in 1724 under the title "A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates." The book became one of the most popular pirate narratives of the time, providing a vivid account of life as a pirate in the early 18th century. Jenkins' work had a significant influence on subsequent pirate literature, including Daniel Defoe's "Captain Singleton" and Johann Gottfried von Herder's "Sturm und Drang." Jenkins died in 1776, having lived a life that straddled the lines of piracy, the navy, and literature.
