About Paul Biya

Paul Biya, born on February 13, 1933, in Mvomeka'a, Cameroon, is a prominent political figure who has served as the President of Cameroon since November 6, 1982. Biya, a member of the Etunge clan, was educated at the Lycée Leclerc in Yaoundé before continuing his studies in France, where he earned degrees from the Institut Supérieur d'Études Techniques (ISET) and the École Nationale de la France d'Outre-Mer (ENFO). His political journey began in 1956 when he joined the Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC), a nationalist movement. However, after the UPC's violent uprising against French rule, Biya was arrested and imprisoned from 1957 to 1960. Upon his release, he became actively involved in theCameroon National Union (CNU), which later merged with other parties to form Cameroon's dominant political party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM). Biya served as Prime Minister from 1975 to 1982 under President Ahmadou Ahidjo. Upon Ahidjo's resignation, Biya took office as President, a position he has held ever since, leading one of Africa's longest-serving governments. Biya's rule has been marked by political repression and corruption allegations, although his supporters credit him with maintaining stability and economic growth in Cameroon. His major works, in terms of policy, include the introduction of multi-party democracy in 1990, the promotion of French as an official language, and various infrastructure development projects. His leadership style, often criticized for its autocratic nature, has been a subject of international debate. Despite this, Biya remains a significant figure in Cameroon's political landscape, shaping the country's direction over the past four decades.
