About Miguel

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) was a renowned Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright, considered one of the greatest writers in the Spanish language. Born on September 29, 1547, in Alcalá de Henares, near Madrid, he grew up in poverty but was educated at the University of Salamanca. Cervantes served as a soldier for much of his life, participating in battles against the Ottoman Empire and the Dutch Republic. It was during these military campaigns that he sustained severe wounds which would plague him throughout his later years. Cervantes' literary career began in earnest with the publication of "La Galatea" (1589), a pastoral romance that showcased his ability to weave humor and satire into narrative prose. However, it was his magnum opus, "Don Quixote de la Mancha" (1605 and 1615), which truly cemented his legacy. This seminal work of fiction, considered the first modern novel, follows the adventures of Alonso Quixano, a nobleman who loses his sanity and embarks on a chivalric journey as the manly knight Don Quixote. "Don Quixote" reflects Cervantes' unique blend of humor, satire, romance, and realism, as well as his profound insights into human nature. The novel also showcases the author's wit and intellectual prowess, with countless allusions to literary works, philosophy, and current events. Cervantes' other notable works include "El Coloquio de los Perros" (1613), a satirical dialogue between two dogs who discuss human affairs, and numerous poems and plays, many of which were published posthumously. Despite the financial struggles he faced throughout his life, Cervantes left an indelible mark on Spanish literature and world literature as a whole. He died in Madrid on April 22, 1616.

Interestingly, I matured as a musician and as an artist before I matured as a man. What I mean by that is, I was ready to be completely vulnerable and honest with myself and unapologetic when it comes to how I express myself in my medium. But I wasn't as secure in doing that when it came to just being myself.
