About Michael Chang

Michael Cunningham Chang (born March 13, 1954) is an American novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter, best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" (2000). Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Chang was the youngest child in a Chinese-American family, which had moved to the United States from China in the early 1950s. His parents owned a laundry and a dry-cleaning business. Chang's literary career began in the late 1970s when he published his first short story in The New Yorker. He went on to study at Yale University, where he was a member of Skull & Bones and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. His debut novel, "Can You Remember Love?" (1987), tells the story of two middle-aged brothers who reunite after years apart. Chang's breakthrough came with "The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay," a novel that spans the 20th century and follows two cousins who create a successful comic book series during World War II. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000, catapulting Chang into the literary spotlight. In 2003, Chang adapted "The Hours," his own novel that explores the interconnected lives of three women across time, into a film starring Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman. The film was nominated for multiple Academy Awards. Chang's other notable works include "A Home at the End of the World" (2008), which revolves around the relationships between three men over several decades, and "By the Grace of God" (2013), a novel that explores the life of a transgender woman. Today, Michael Chang continues to write and teach creative writing at Yale University. His works are celebrated for their deeply human characters, complex narratives, and exploration of themes such as identity, love, and family.
