About Matt Sharp

Matt Sharp (born June 30, 1971) is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer, best known as the founding bassist of the influential alternative rock band Weezer. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Sharp developed a love for music at an early age, inspired by his parents' diverse taste in music, including The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Ramones. Sharp attended Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, where he met future Weezer bandmates Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, and Brian Bell. The four formed Weezer in 1992, gaining immediate attention with their self-titled debut album (often referred to as "The Blue Album") in 1994. Sharp co-wrote several of the album's hits, including "Undone - The Sweater Song," and his distinctive basslines helped define the band's sound. Following the success of "The Blue Album," Sharp decided to leave Weezer in 1998 to pursue other creative interests. He formed the bands Rilo Kiley (initially as a side project with Jenny Lewis) and The Rentals, serving as songwriter, lead vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist for both groups. The Rentals' most notable work is the critically acclaimed album "Return of the Rentals" in 1996, which features the hit single "Friendship Is a Key." In addition to his musical career, Sharp has also ventured into film and television, co-writing the screenplay for the cult classic movie "Dude, Where's My Car?" (2000). Today, he continues to produce music and collaborate with various artists while maintaining a low profile compared to his earlier days in Weezer. Sharp's contributions to alternative rock have left an indelible mark on the genre, ensuring his place as a key figure in the world of music.
