Louis Stokes (July 16, 1925 – December 19, 2015) was an influential African American politician, lawyer, and civil rights activist who served as a United States Representative for Ohio's 11th congressional district from 1989 to 2009. Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Stokes was raised by his grandmother in a largely segregated neighborhood during the Great Depression. Despite these challenges, he excelled academically and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Prairie View A&M University in 1947. After serving in the United States Army, he returned to Cleveland and earned his law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1953. Stokes' political career began in earnest when he was elected as a city councilman for Cleveland in 1960, becoming the first black city official in more than 100 years. In 1967, he made history again by being elected as the first African American member of Congress from Ohio and the second black congressman from the Midwest.
