About Kofi Annan

Kofi Atta Annan (April 8, 1938 – August 18, 2018) was a Ghanaian diplomat and politician who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006. Born in Kumasi, Ghana, Annan attended Mfantsipim School before studying Economics at Kumasi College of Science and Technology and Economics at the Kumasi Polytechnic (now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology). His diplomatic career began in 1962 with the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Annan joined the UN in 1969 as a budget officer. He rose through the ranks, becoming Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping in 1992, and was selected to serve as Secretary-General over two other candidates, Boutros Boutros-Ghali of Egypt and Slovenia's Janez Drnovšek. During his tenure as Secretary-General, Annan advocated for the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, which allows international military intervention in cases of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. He also created the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, a public-private partnership that provides financing to combat these diseases. Annan is best known for his efforts towards peacekeeping and conflict resolution, particularly in Africa. He was instrumental in resolving conflicts in Somalia, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, and Libya. Post-UN, he continued to work on humanitarian issues as Chair of The Elders, a group founded by Nelson Mandela, and as Chairman of The Kofi Annan Foundation. In 2001, Annan and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in bringing peace to the Congo, ending ethnic conflicts in Sierra Leone, and intervening in the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, among other initiatives. Annan passed away on August 18, 2018, at the age of 80. His quotes reflect his dedication to global peace, human rights, and development, as well as his belief in the power of dialogue and diplomacy to solve complex international issues.
