About Joschka Fischer

Joschka Fischer (born June 19, 1948) is a German politician who served as Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005, under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Born in Karlsruhe, West Germany, Fischer was influenced early on by the student movement and the counterculture of the 1960s, which led him to join the Socialist Student Union. He later became involved with the radical extra-parliamentary opposition (APO) movement, advocating for nonviolent resistance and direct democracy. In 1983, Fischer co-founded the Alliance '90/The Greens, a political party that combined environmentalist and pacifist values with leftist politics. He served as the party's chair from 1989 to 1991 and again from 2005 to 2011. Fischer is perhaps best known for his role in German foreign policy during his time as Foreign Minister, most notably his handling of Germany's involvement in the Kosovo War. He also played a key role in the international diplomacy leading up to the Iraq War and the Iranian nuclear program. One of Fischer's most significant contributions was his advocacy for a more assertive European Union (EU). Under his leadership, Germany took a more active role in EU affairs, paving the way for the Lisbon Treaty and the creation of the post of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. After leaving office, Fischer served as the President of the Social Democratic Party from 2006 to 2011. He remains active in politics and international relations through his work with various think tanks and organizations. His memoir, "Mein Leben. Von den Straßen nach der Macht" (My Life: From Streets to Power), was published in 2014.
