About Joe Perry

Joseph Anthony "Joe" Perry (born September 10, 1950) is an American musician, songwriter, and actor, best known as the lead guitarist of the hard rock band Aerosmith, during which he also shares the vocal duties with Steven Tyler. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Perry developed an early interest in music, influenced by artists such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and The Rolling Stones. He formed a band called Jam Band with some high school friends, which later evolved into Aerosmith in 1970. Aerosmith's self-titled debut album in 1973 was a commercial success, followed by a series of hit albums like "Toys in the Attic" (1975), "Rocks" (1976), and "Draw the Line" (1977). However, drug abuse issues led to the band's breakup in 1980. Perry pursued a solo career and formed the supergroup The Hollywood Vampires with Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper. Aerosmith reunited in 1984 and experienced a resurgence with their multi-platinum album "Permanent Vacation" (1987). Throughout his career, Perry has been recognized for his unique guitar style and powerhouse vocals. He was ranked 27th on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2011. His major works with Aerosmith include "Sweet Emotion," "Walk This Way," "Dream On," and "Janie's Got a Gun." Perry continues to tour and record with Aerosmith, maintaining his status as one of the most influential musicians in rock 'n' roll history.

Five years after Aerosmith got back together, I realized how fragile we are as humans. There was a time I thought we were bulletproof, but then things happened and I came to the realization that I had to play every gig as if it was my last show. You have to start thinking that way, because you never know what's going to happen next.

My Portuguese uncle had a Portuguese version of a ukulele. The family would pull it out after dinner and play Portuguese folk songs on it. I couldn't wait for him to finish so I could get my hands on it. I was seven or eight years old. And he used to have a Fender amp in his house and an electric guitar. I would spend hours making sounds.
