About George Smathers

George Smathers (1913-2007) was an accomplished American politician, lawyer, and writer who served as a United States Senator from Florida from 1951 to 1968, and later as Ambassador to the Court of Saint James's (the British Embassy in London) from 1989 to 1993. Smathers was born on February 10, 1913, in Tampa, Florida, to George Harvey Smathers Sr., a prominent local attorney and businessman, and Mary Elizabeth Smathers. Smathers attended the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in law in 1935. He then went on to study at Harvard Law School, where he graduated with a Doctor of Law in 1938. Smathers returned to Tampa and began practicing law with his father before being drafted into the United States Army during World War II. He served as an officer in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, achieving the rank of major. In 1950, Smathers ran for the Senate and won, becoming the youngest senator at that time. During his tenure, he was a member of the Democratic leadership and served on numerous committees, including the Armed Services Committee, the Labor and Public Welfare Committee, and the Judiciary Committee. Smathers is perhaps best known for his role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and his work on nuclear non-proliferation. In addition to his political career, Smathers was also a prolific writer.
