About Frank Lowy

Frank Lowy (born 1934) is an Israeli-Australian business magnate, philanthropist, and retired shopping mall tycoon of Polish Jewish descent. Born in Poland, he survived the Holocaust as a child by hiding with his family in a forest near the town of Siedlce. After World War II, they immigrated to Palestine (now Israel). In 1952, Lowy joined the Palmach, an elite fighting force of Haganah, the pre-state Jewish defense organization. He served as an officer in the Israeli Defense Forces until 1956. Following his military service, he studied economics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1960, Lowy moved to Sydney, Australia, where he met his future business partner, John Saunders. Together, they founded Westfield Group in 1960, initially as a real estate investment and development company. They transformed the Australian retail landscape by building large shopping malls that offered consumers a one-stop-shop experience. The first Westfield Shopping Centre was opened in 1973 at Hurstville, New South Wales. Over the next few decades, they expanded globally with significant developments in the United Kingdom, the United States, and New Zealand. In 2014, Westfield Group was acquired by Unibail-Rodamco, creating the largest shopping mall company in the world. Lowy's influence extended beyond business. He served as a member of the Australian Labor Party and was appointed to the Order of Australia for services to commerce, to the Jewish community, and to philanthropy. In Israel, he has been instrumental in establishing the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC) and is a significant donor to various charities, including medical research and Holocaust education organizations. Despite his success, Lowy remains humble and grounded, crediting much of his achievements to luck and timing rather than individual genius. His life story, marked by survival, service, and success, continues to inspire many around the world.

Money is misunderstood. The fact is if you want to be successful - the money will follow you. If you are a doctor, something else will follow you. If you are successful, there is an accompaniment. If your goal is just to make money, you won't succeed. Money is a commodity to use, not to be dictated by.
