David Axelrod (born December 18, 1956) is an acclaimed American political strategist, pollster, commentator, and author. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Axelrod grew up in a politically engaged Jewish family. His interest in politics was sparked at an early age, particularly by the civil rights movement and the presidency of John F. Kennedy. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a degree in Political Science in 1978, Axelrod began his career working for then-Mayor Richard J. Daley of Chicago. He later joined the consulting firm ABT Associates where he honed his skills in political strategy and polling. In 2005, Axelrod joined forces with Senator Barack Obama to help him win the Democratic nomination and then the presidency in 2008. Their successful partnership continued throughout Obama's first term. Axelrod left the White House in 2011 but remained a close advisor to Obama until the end of his second term. Axelrod is also an accomplished author. His book "Believer: My Forty Years in Politics" (2015) offers insights into his life and career, including his work with Obama. Interpretations of Popular Quotes

"Politics is not about policy, it's about emotion."

This quote by David Axelrod suggests that while policies are crucial in governing, the emotional connection between leaders and constituents often plays a significant role in politics. In other words, people make political decisions based on their feelings and perceptions rather than just logical policy analysis. Political campaigns often aim to stir up emotions (e.g., hope, fear, loyalty) to influence voters' choices. Understanding this emotional aspect is essential for effective campaigning and policymaking.

"Change is never welcome, but nearly everything that's good for us ultimately takes getting used to."

David Axelrod's quote emphasizes that change, despite being generally unwelcome, is often necessary for personal and collective growth. Change can be uncomfortable or challenging at first, but it eventually leads to beneficial outcomes if we persevere through the initial discomfort of adaptation. This quote underscores the importance of embracing change, understanding that it might take time to become accustomed to new situations, but ultimately leading us towards progress and improvement in our lives.

"In politics, an explanation is just a prelude to a attack."

In this quote, David Axelrod suggests that in the realm of politics, providing an explanation or rationale for one's actions (or those of one's political adversaries) is not typically aimed at clarifying the situation, but rather as a precursor to a critical evaluation or attack. Essentially, Axelrod posits that explaining oneself in politics often sets the stage for further conflict and criticism, rather than fostering understanding or resolution.

"The art of politics is the ability to discern when it is necessary to change and when it is essential to remain constant."

David Axelrod's quote highlights that in politics, the key skill lies in understanding when it's appropriate to adapt and when rigidity is required. Change becomes crucial when circumstances necessitate a shift in approach or strategy, while remaining steadfast serves as a foundation for consistency and integrity in maintaining core values and beliefs.

"Politics is not a game for the timid or the weak, but for those who dare to challenge conventional wisdom and take risks on new ideas."

This quote by David Axelrod underscores the spirit of political action, emphasizing it as a domain for the bold and courageous. It suggests that political engagement is not about adhering to the status quo or playing safely within established norms, but rather, it's about challenging the existing wisdom and pushing boundaries with fresh ideas. Essentially, Axelrod argues that effective political leadership demands daring innovation and the willingness to take calculated risks for the greater good.

The truth is that as we move forward, if one side says we can't raise any taxes on anybody or any interest, and the other side says we can't cut anything, we're obviously not going to make progress on this. And our interest is in making progress on this.

I came to the conclusion months ago, and I said it to members of Congress, that the only way people are going to fully appreciate what this reform is if we pass it and implement it and it becomes not a caricature but a reality, and I still believe that.
