About Cory Booker

Cory Anthony Booker was born on April 27, 1969, in Washington D.C., to Cary Alfred Booker, a IBM executive, and Carolyn Rose (Judson) Booker, a nuclear strategist and president of the NAACP's Newark branch. Raised in Harrington Park, New Jersey, Booker experienced a diverse background that shaped his political views and social activism. Booker graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1991, and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. Upon his return to the U.S., he received a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1994. Booker's political career began in Newark, New Jersey, where he served as a municipal aid under Mayor Sharpe James. In 2006, Booker was elected to the Senate of New Jersey and became the first African American to win election by the general electorate in the state's history. He held this position until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2013, again making history as the first African American U.S. Senator from New Jersey. Known for his charisma and progressive views, Booker has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, LGBTQ+ rights, and gun control. He gained national attention during his term as Mayor of Newark when he lived in a troubled housing project to raise awareness about the conditions faced by its residents. Booker's major works include co-authoring "United: Thoughts on Finding Common Ground and Advancing the Common Good" with former Mississippi Governor, Phil Bryant, in 2018. In 2020, he released his memoir, "Waste No More: A Memoir of Hope," detailing his personal journey and political career. Booker announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in February 2019 but suspended his campaign in January 2020. As of now, he continues to serve as a U.S. Senator representing New Jersey.

I respect and value the ideals of rugged individualism and self-reliance. But rugged individualism didn't defeat the British, it didn't get us to the moon, build our nation's highways, or map the human genome. We did that together. This is the high call of patriotism.
