About Clement Freud

Clement Freud (1924-2009) was a prolific British writer, broadcaster, psychotherapist, and television personality, known not only for his own accomplishments but also as the nephew of renowned psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and the brother of author and chef Delia Smith. Born on November 23, 1924, in Paddington, London, Clement Freud was the third child of Ernst Ludwig Freud (the second son of Sigmund Freud) and his wife, Lucie Freud née Gomperz. Growing up during World War II, he spent part of his childhood in the United States before returning to England in 1940. Freud studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a degree in law in 1947. His experiences at Cambridge influenced his later work as a writer and broadcaster, contributing to the 'Cambridge Circus' comedic troupe that included future satirists Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. In 1953, Freud co-founded the influential British satirical magazine "Private Eye" with Nicholas Luard, where he served as editor until 1966. He wrote extensively for radio and television throughout his career, creating popular programs such as "Just a Minute," which he also appeared on regularly. Freud's literary contributions include numerous books, essays, and plays. His first novel, "The Famous Five Go Bohemian" (1961), was a humorous take on the popular children's series by Enid Blyton. Other notable works include "What On Earth Is Going On?" (1972) and "The Freudian Slip: And Other Stories of Our Unconscious Mind" (1983). In addition to his creative pursuits, Freud was a trained psychotherapist who ran a private practice in London.
