Betty Shabazz, born on February 28, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, was an influential American educator, philanthropist, and civil rights activist. Known as Elaine Jones prior to her marriage, she later became known as Dr. Betty Shabazz, after her union with Malcolm X. Betty Shabazz's early life was marked by adversity. She was the eldest of eight children born to Regina and William Stevenson, a couple who faced economic hardship and racism during their time in Detroit. Despite these challenges, Betty excelled academically, graduating from Northern High School in 1950 as valedictorian. It was during her time at Antioke that she met Malcolm X, who was then studying under the name Malcolm Little. They married in January 1958 and had six children together. After Malcolm X's assassination in February 1965, Betty Shabazz continued his work, advocating for civil rights and educational opportunities for African Americans. She earned a Master's degree from the University of Michigan and then a Ph.D. in Education Administration from the City University of New York in 1975. In 1972, she co-founded the Muslim Girls Training and Family Center (MGTF) with her sister-in-law, Dr. Betty X. Seabrook, to empower young African American girls through education and cultural awareness. This organization continues its work today. Betty Shabazz passed away on June 23, 1997, due to complications from a fire that occurred at her home in 1973.
